Setting as a Character
The river can be considered a character because Eddie does a fantastic job of useing words that allow the reader to create a picture in thier head. This is shown when Eddie says " the sun is going down, shadows are long, everything is swathed in hues of yellow and gol. Along the edge where the lake is shallow, marsh grass grows in the solor of ripening wheat and creates a fake shoreline exending about ten yards or so." The river should also be considered a character because it has a mind of its own and Eddie talks about it like it is a living thing, and sometimes the river turns against Eddie like when the river took his boat and other times the river helps Eddie by letting the current take him down stream so he does not have to work as hard. The river is very important to the story and because it has its own personality it should be cosidered to be a character.

I agree that the river could be consider as a character because he does use alot of description toward the river. Also just the way he talks about the river toward people that he meets along his journey and the people that he meets even talk about the river as a person.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The river does has a mind of its own in the way it changes and has its' own personality. Not just the description makes the river a character though. I can describe a chair all day but it isn't considered to be a person. It's the interactions that Eddy has with the river that makes it seem that it is another character.
ReplyDeleteagree. i think that the river is considered a charecter because of how he describes it. i also believe that he knows that the river is in control and a good example is the quote that you provided about how he lets the river take him downstream because trying to go against it would be futile.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the river could be considered a character also, because of him using personification. He has a relationship with this river, like a person can have a relationship with an animal. He is dependent on the river, and that is what makes it have the quality of being a character. Your quote describes imagery, which I agree does help us readers to better understand the meaning.
